Our Journey in Christian Education and Faith Formation: New Commitments and Fruitful Ministry

In recent years, many churches have begun to think about Sunday School and Christian Education as part of a broader pursuit: faith formation.

Faith formation begins at birth, is witnessed to in Baptism, in Confirmation, and, as the term implies, in our daily spiritual growth. At Lowhill, what’s historically been called Christian Education has had a long, important history.

Our new Sunday School program, with great new curriculum from Spark, builds on the strength of the past but does so in a way that matters and makes sense to parents and children in the present.

A New Beginning

On September 9, 2019, we commissioned our new teachers as part of our Rally Day service. Rally Day was also a celebration: a celebration of a great summer, a celebration of the coming fall and all the excitement that change brings, and, mostly importantly, a celebration of our families and children and of our church family.

With all of that said, we want to continue growing in our connection to the wider community.  In the United Church of Christ, we often begin our services with these words of welcome: “Whoever you are, and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”

At Christ’s Church at Lowhill, we really mean that.  That’s one of the reasons we host the Lowhill Food Pantry, the only food pantry dedicated to serving the seniors, families, and children of the Northwestern Lehigh School District.  It’s one of the reasons we host  events throughout the year like picnics, yard-sales, penny parties, movie nights, and Vacation Bible School.   It’s also one of the reasons that, as an historic church founded in 1769, we are following the lead of the Holy Spirit for a meaningful ministry of witness, worship, service, and justice in ways that matter now.

Whether or not you have children, and whether or not you have had a previous connection to Christ’s Church at Lowhill (or, before 1983, Lowhill Union Church), you are invited to join with us in worship, service, fellowship, study, and love.  Whoever you are, and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. You are wanted here. May your own unique story, gifts, and journey find a home with ours, as we together build the kingdom of God as the Body of Christ at Christ’s Church at Lowhill, UCC.

Children have always been a vital part of the life of our Church.  During our Sunday service, children have a time of lesson, story, or song with Pastor Chris, and every week, children help collect the Joyful Noise Loose Plate Offering that goes to local organizations helping people in need. We believe that including children in important aspects of the weekly Sunday service helps us lift up the commitment to understand church as an extended family.

Sunday School: Our new Sunday School program, featuring the Spark curriculum, is a hit! We are so excited by the response from children and families, and we’re exploring new options for a new, dedicated space for this growing ministry!


Confirmation: Traditionally, confirmation is a step on the journey of faith that began with baptism, and is often undertaken as young people begin to sense a call to “confirm” their faith and desire to officially join a local church in membership. Confirmation is a time of spiritual growth, discernment, and learning more about the faith we share. It’s an affirmation of our place in the family of Christ and in the family of Christ’s Church at Lowhill. The confirmation program is open to anyone 12 or older who wishes to learn and confirm their faith in a journey of community and mentoring. It is not necessary to have been baptized prior to beginning the program. Individuals of all ages who have already been confirmed are welcome to join the program as a way of reaffirming and continuing their own baptismal and vows, pledges of Christian faith, and commitment to Christ’s universal church and Christ’s Church at Lowhill specifically.

Through confirmation, participants learn about the Christian faith and its role in an increasingly pluralistic world. They explore the identity of the United Church of Christ and they get to know the history and mission of our particular congregation. Here, brave questions of faith are encouraged! Confirmation is not for those who have solved the mystery of their faith; it is for those who aren’t afraid to wonder what they believe and who seek to embark on a journey of service, creative expression, prayer, and Christian community.


Adult Faith Formation:
“I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”
