A Special Service
We’re excited to share that Sunday, September 9 will be a very special service for families and for the church family at Christ’s Church at Lowhill!
What is Rally Day?
“Rally Day” is a tradition many Christian churches. After a busy summer, Rally Day has historically been the day that churches “kick-off” their fall and winter programs, including Sunday School and what later came to be called Christian Education. In recent years, many churches have begun to think about Sunday School and Christian Education as part of a broader pursuit called “faith formation.”
Faith formation begins at birth, is witnessed to in Baptism, in Confirmation, and, as the term implies, in our daily spiritual growth. We’re very excited to kick-off a new Sunday School program this fall that builds on the strength of the past but does so in a way that matters and makes sense to parents and children in the present.
On September 9, we’ll be commissioning our new teachers, and you’ll get to hear a bit about what’s being planned for our Sunday School program. Rally Day is also a celebration: a celebration of a great summer, a celebration of the coming fall and all the excitement that change brings, and, most importantly, a celebration of our families and children and of our church family. Parents, please join us with your families on September 9! We’ll also be having a special “blessing of the backpacks” as a way to pray for and encourage all students returning back to their public, private, or home-school settings for the academic year.
A ‘Homecoming’ Celebration!
Because Rally Day is a time to highlight and celebrate family, we’re also incorporating another tradition known in some churches as “homecoming.” Whether or not you’re a parent or grandparent of a child at Lowhill, we’re asking all folks who have had any connection whatsoever to Lowhill Church to “come home” for our Rally Day and Homecoming service on September 9th.
With all of that said, we want to continue growing in our connection to the wider community. In the United Church of Christ, we often begin our services with these words of welcome: “Whoever you are, and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.”
At Christ’s Church at Lowhill, we really mean that. That’s one of the reasons we host the Lowhill Food Pantry, the only food pantry dedicated to serving the seniors, families, and children of the Northwestern Lehigh School District. It’s one of the reasons we host events throughout the year like picnics, yard-sales, penny parties, movie nights, and Vacation Bible School. It’s also one of the reasons that, as an historic church founded in 1769, we are following the lead of the Holy Spirit for a meaningful ministry of witness, worship, service, and justice in ways that matter now.
Whether or not you have children, and whether or not you have had a previous connection to Christ’s Church at Lowhill (or, before 1983, Lowhill Union Church), you are invited to join with us in worship, service, fellowship, study, and love. Whoever you are, and wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. You are wanted here. May your own unique story, gifts, and journey find a home with ours, as we together build the kingdom of God as the Body of Christ at Christ’s Church at Lowhill, UCC.
Please join us on September 9th and beyond!
Yours in Service and Love,
Christ’s Church at Lowhill,
